brief/briefing
Strongly suspect this has been lifted from the English and means 'briefing' (e.g. giving the speakers details of what they should talk about, etc.) Both 'briefer' and 'briefing' are in Le Petit Robert, with the meanings you would expect: "mettre au courant par un briefing, informer collectivement"

: Neutral because IMHO "a brief" and "a briefing" are not the same, and there seems to be more to this than meets the eye. That said, I suspect that ultimately, we may agree, if we allow for the intended meaning & not what it actually says.. :-)

: "briefing session" is the rendering I find often fits here.

Comment: "Briefing: "mettre au courant" fits nicely and Charlotte was the first. Thanks also to Francis and Charlie -nice when you all agree amongst yourselves :-)"

: A proprement parler, I think you are right. However, I have doubts that the author actually meant this (see below). I would however accept the argument that we should translate what it *says*, not what we think it means :-)

probably briefing...
...however, this is *not* the same as a brief (in English I mean)
If you google it for how it is actually used (not easy, as "un brief" is the same as "UN brief", i.e. for the United Nations), you'll see it used in contexts where it could easily mean the same as "brief" in English, i.e. a mission, assignment, e.g.:

This is Francis' interpretation (I think!), and is probably, strictly speaking, correct.
However, it is clearly also used to mean "briefing" i.e. a meeting to give instructions, which should, strictly speaking, be the same word in French.

However, clearly either English word (brief or briefing) is possible in the context you have given, and it may be advisable to ask the client. If I had to select one, I'd go for "briefing" on the grounds of the cost given - I think it would cost a fair bit to set up an assignment/brief; probably much less to organise a "briefing" meeting.
