I didn't quite dare make that Conf. 5, but I really am pretty sure!
It's not 'single'phase' rectification (unless you have some other clues about 3-phase operation elsewhere), but half-wave; if you apply an ac sinewave to a single rectifiying diode, you get alternate half-cycles coming through, producing rwa 'lumpy' dc. That must surely be what they are describing here.
As they say, this simple technique is perfectly adequate for simple needs.
