Anyone else noticing compatibility issues between memoQ and Phrase lately? I'm on 11.2 and my Phrase exported files throw error warnings whenever there's a subscript or superscript character involved. When I copy the superscript character to the source field, memoQ's QA checker crashes on Ctrl+Enter and I receive the dreaded warning 'The requested task could not be completed or an operation failed, but you can safely continue your work.' My temporary workaround is to use m2 instead of m² and then run a search and replace operation when importing the file back into the Phrase platform.

Has Phrase changed its formatting? I have never encountered these issues in all the years I have worked on Phrase MXLIFF files. Is this behaviour still present on more recent build/versions? The amount of work that is presented to me on this platform is growing, so I'd like to resolve this issue.

Thanks,
Erwin

Unicode encoding? May 2

I'm not familiar with those programs you've mentioned, but isn't Unicode encoding necessary for superscript and subscript characters?

MXLIFF files are in UTF-8 format.

Like I've said, I'm not familiar with those programs, but there's also UTF-8 with BOM, and UTF-8 without BOM, and check again maybe you are choosing different format than MXLIFF, if you updated or reinstall, maybe the default format now is changed (not MXLIFF ). Or this is the only format that these programs are using?

Update? May 2

Did you solve your problem? It's probably some update issue.

It could be. That's why I asked about it in my initial query. No responses from other memoQ users yet though, so I have to dig deeper...

MXLIFF May 5

So I did a little research about MXLIFF and I found out that BOM thing is for SDL Trados.

SDL Trados adds additional information to .XLIFFs that are not a native part of the .MXLIFF file format. Select the Preserve; don't add if not originally present BOM option and the Do not store segmentation information in the translated file setting when exporting from SDL Trados to produce a file that be used with Phrase.

And on this link there's instruction for MemoQ
https://support.phrase.com/hc/en-us/articles/5709739992860--MXLIFF-Files-TMS

Can you open your file with this https://poedit.net/ ???

If you can, did it preserved your superscripts and subscripts?

To convert your MXLIFF into XLIFF, just rename the file, and vice versa.

So if your superscripts and subscripts don't work in MXLIFF, try them with XLIFF format, and when you are finished rename your extension to convert it.

update May 13

I'd like to give an update on this issue for users that may experience the same. I am still unsure what causes the format misalignment between the source and target segment, but at least disabling the QA setting 'Verify that numbers are matched on the target side' seems to provide a reliable workaround.
